Conrail Bay Window Caboose

This metal sign pays tribute to Conrail, the railroad that changed the rules for all railroads.

This caboose, #21202 was the second in the class of N21 cabooses, which happened to be the only class of cabooses ordered by Conrail-the rest that they owned were inherited. This photo was taken March 13 2017 outside of Omnisource in Indianapolis. As of March 24, 2017, it was still being used by CSX as a shoving platform, and it is a fine reminder of the railroad that was Conrail.

Before Conrail, its predecessor the Penn Central was struggling along with the rest of the industry due to increasing debts from passenger service, intense competition from road and airways, and strict rules on crew hours and not allowing railroads to abandon unprofitable lines. Things changed once Conrail was created as a government funded company similar to Amtrak to allow freight rail traffic to remain in the northwestern US. Conrail being a government funded operation allowed for the government to see inside the workings of the railroad and see how certain conditions and laws were crippling the railroad industry. Thanks to Conrail, many of these laws were changed or removed, allowing Conrail to return to profit and become a private company standing on its own with no government funding.
